Tehbotol Sosro Design Competition

Last year, I had the chance to serve as a jury member for a renowned illustration competition by Tehbotol Sosro. Tehbotol Sosro is a heritage tea bottle brand from Indonesia, known for its annual design competition where 15-20 illustrations are selected to be printed as their labels. The theme for the 2023 competition was "Bangga Berbudaya Asli Indonesia" (Proud of Original Indonesian Culture).
I made two designs for this, one for the competition poster and one for the label.
I felt incredibly fortunate and grateful for the opportunity to judge and lead this competition. It was very challenging to choose the 14 best illustrations from over 1,000 submissions, as they were all impressive.
A huge thank you to my team at Mahavisual for organizing the entire competition and creating such a wonderful program with all the selected winners. Thank you to Tehbotol Sosro for this amazing opportunity, and to all the talented artists who participated. It was an honor to witness such creativity and cultural pride. Seeing these beautiful designs on Tehbotol Sosro bottles, celebrating our rich Indonesian heritage, has been truly rewarding.
"Mapeed Tradition"

My artwork is a visual homage to the richness and diversity of Balinese culture, inspired by the Mapeed ritual. Growing up on this Indonesian island, I witnessed firsthand the beauty and vibrancy of this ancient tradition, which remains an integral part of Balinese life to this day.
At its core, Mapeed is a ritual of thanksgiving, as women come together to offer their blessings and gratitude to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, the Almighty God. It is a communal effort, with women forming a line to deliver their offerings, while their loved ones accompany them in full traditional Balinese attire, a dazzling display of colors and patterns.
In my artwork, I have sought to capture the essence of this tradition, incorporating traditional Balinese elements such as temple carvings and ornate textiles, as well as the lush, verdant landscapes of Bali. The result is a vibrant and dynamic composition that celebrates the enduring beauty of Balinese culture.
Through this artwork, I hope to inspire a greater appreciation for the cultural heritage of Indonesia, and a renewed sense of pride in the unique traditions that make Bali such a special place. It is a tribute to the beauty of women and the enduring power of community, as well as a celebration of the artistic and cultural richness of this extraordinary island.
